Jesse Taylor

JESSE TAYLOR (1865 – 1938) Campden Photographer

Our CADHAS Exhibition of photographs taken 100 years ago by Jesse Taylor attracted well over 500 visitors and prompted more enquiries into the history of local houses and events. An unknown house, sparkling white, turned out to be Granbrook House in Mickleton, built of cement around 1908 for Joseph Webb on his market garden site. This brought out some memories of ‘teen raves’ in the deserted building in the 1960’s, before it was demolished. The photographs will provide us with material for research for a long time to come – and more keep appearing, as people dig out their own albums and lend us the photos to be scanned. Aston Subedge – these photographs are a particularly good example of Jesse Taylor’s skills. He has posed the children and adults to enhance the views of the buildings and village scenes. Do you know this family who lived at Glebe Farm?

We are very grateful to the volunteers who put in so much time on the research and organisation of the Exhibition, and to Campden BRI, Campden School and Campden Town Council for the loan of display boards. Thanks also to Chipping Campden Community Trust who gave a grant for this and our ongoing work of ‘bringing local history to life’ for people of all ages.
